Beyond the Classroom: Discussing Antonio Vivaldi

The Four Seasons (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Composed in 1723, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi’s best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music. The texture of each concerto is varied, each resembling its respective season. For example, “Winter” is peppered with silvery pizzicato notes from the high strings, calling to mind icy rain, whereas “Summer” evokes a thunderstorm in its final movement, which is why the movement is often dubbed “Storm.” From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-dYNttdgl0&feature=related

Facts your child might know:

1. Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy on March 4th 1678

2. Known as the “Red Priest”

3. From the Baroque period

4. Most famous work is The Four Seasons

5. He had red hair

6. He taught girls at an orphanage to play the Violin

Beyond the Classroom: try it with your child on your drive home this afternoon by seeking through radio stations! Ask questions that require key word answers rather than yes/no answers.
